Hitchin is known for being a “Historic Market Town” but even history can’t keep up with the Market!
Historians have been able to date Hitchin Market back to 1268, however there is knowledge of trading happening in Hitchin well before this.
The current site was built in 1973, on the site of the old church school and has evolved over time.
Recently, the Market has faced strong adversaries in regard to moving or completely closing the market.
This has stemmed from the planning of the Churchyard Development.
Hitchin Market is now, more than ever, in need of your voice, strength, and support for its continuation in Hitchin.
As of June 2008, Hitchin Market Limited, was formed to run, manage, and care for the Market as a non-profit company
This company has been the hidden backbone of the Market since forming, and it’s thanks to this company that the Market has been able to
stay open for business.
Since COVID-19, business has very clearly plummeted, with footfall diminishing, businesses have suffered. The current economic crisis has
meant Traders have struggled to keep their businesses running.
Without your support, you will see less Traders on the Market as they can not operate. You will see the Market shrink, as businesses leave,
and the council remove parts of the Markets space. It’s after this that the community and town will lose a large part of history as
Hitchin Market Limited will be forced to shut it’s doors, and Hitchin Market will no longer be able to operate.
